Academy Awards

Current Prediction for Best Pic - BIRDMAN

From 538.com -
Here's a breakdown of how predictive each of the awards are in terms of winning the best pic. I added in the films that won, as this was put together before the DAGs and the BAFTAs.

This shows Birdman as a favorite, having won the big guild awards (PGA, SAG, DGA). Only 1 film has ever swept these three guilds and then gone on to lose best pic (Apollo 13). A second film, Chicago, managed to lose best director but win best pic after winning the 3. Otherwise every sweeping film wins Best Dir and Best Pic, if they were nominated (see Argo...).

There is no overlap between members voting on the Golden Globes and the Academy.

On the BAFTAs win from Boyhood -
The membership of BAFTA, or the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, is comprised of roughly 6,500 people — almost exactly the same number as the Academy — and is believed to include most of the roughly 250 to 500 Academy members who are based in the U.K.

The best film BAFTA winner is determined by a popular vote, not a preferential ballot, as is used by the Academy and the PGA

Blog

I've made a new blog.

If you don't know yet, I quit my job in the financial industry after working there for 3.5 years.

I'm going to go back to doing more of the things that I used to love, and will be looking at a lot of betting opportunities, opportunities in the financial markets, automation ideas, and just any idea that I think is interesting and that has the potential to make money.

I'm working on building an automated bookmaking and arbitrage system for online sportsbetting. This should ideally generate low-risk profit with little manual interaction, once I have everything built up properly. This is still months away from being fully functional, hopefully I will have this up and running by summer 2015.

At the same time I'll be looking at other opportunities that come up, and will blog about any ideas that I have here.

This blog will be useful for me in that it is a central place for me to organize my thoughts and ideas. I am doing this mostly for me, but am very happy to have other people take a look, comment, and question my ideas. If you find this stuff interesting, feel free to follow along on my journey.
